How Do I Join a Zoom Conference in a Canvas Course?

Your instructor may have informed you or your class that there will be a Zoom-based web conference in your Canvas course site. These are easy to join.  While all Dominican students can have their own Zoom Pro account (as covered in this article, which covers how to download Zoom and scheduled your own conferences with others), you are technically not required to have a Zoom account in order to join a meeting, as the Zoom meeting client will download automatically for you.

To join a Zoom conference, head to your Canvas course site and click on the Zoom menu item.  (Do not click the Conferences menu item, if you see one, as that is for Canvas' built-in conferences system, which is separate from Zoom.)  After you click the Zoom menu item, under the Upcoming Meetings tab, just click the Join button that you see at the far right:

That's pretty much all there is to it! Be sure to allow Zoom to test your microphone and your webcam (if you have one) so that you can ensure you will be heard/seen during the meeting, especially if your instructor plans to have class participation.

Accessing a Recorded Zoom Conference

If your instructor recorded the class meeting using Zoom and saved the recording to the "cloud" in Zoom (which is an option that they must enable), you will find the recording the same place in Canvas once it is ready.  Head to the Zoom menu item and check under the Previous Meetings tab. Click on the Recording Details to find the recording:

You will find several items there, including an audio transcript as well as the recording of the entire session.
