My instructor asked me to sign up for an appointment on Canvas. How can I do that?

An instructor can create time slots for students to sign up for faculty-student appointments, all within the Canvas environment. You should have received an automatically-generated email with a link, but even if you did not receive an email (or accidentally deleted it) it is easy to sign up for an appointment.

We have a detailed explanation with more screen captures in the attached PDF at the end of this article. The basic steps are outlined below.

  • Login to Canvas, and then click on the Calendar link that is on the far left-side navigation bar on any Canvas screen. (You do NOT have to be within a specific class site.)
  • After arriving on your calendar, click on the Find Appointment button on the far right of the screen.  You will then see a dialog box asking you to select a class for the appointment to sign up for.
  • After selecting your class and clicking Submit, you can then click on either the Agenda button at the top of the Calendar screen or the Month button. The Agenda button will show a listing of all available appointment slots to sign up for. The Month button will show a conventional Calendar view--which may be handy for you to see the possible appointments in the context of what else you may have to do in Canvas--and you can then click on an available time slot to sign up for it.  If using the Month view, appointment times that have already been reserved by other students will be displayed in a slightly lighter color or simply not visible at all (depending on how your instructor set it up), while those that are still available will be in a much darker color.
  • To reserve a specific time, just click on it within either the Agenda or Calendar view. Once you click on a time available, you will see a screen such as the one shown below.
  • You can add in an optional comment, which your instructor can see, and then click the Reserve link (see number 2 above). That's it! You will see a confirmation message and it will be embedded on your calendar.

More details on this are explained in the PDF attached.
