DU Bicycle Policy
Dominican University is committed to supporting a comprehensive bicycle program for the University community which includes the following:
CYCLING ON CAMPUS
Cyclists are subject to the same rules of the road as motorists and must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians at all times. Cyclists are encouraged to wear protective gear and must use appropriate lighting and/or reflective equipment when riding at night.
Cyclists ride at their own risk and may be held responsible for recklessness and/or injuries to others. DU is not responsible for injuries suffered while cycling or injuries caused by cyclists.
BIKE REGISTRATION
All resident students are required to register their bike with Dominican University and the Village of River Forest, as registered bikes are much easier to identify and recover should they be stolen or removed.
Whereas, commuter students, faculty and staff are encouraged to register their bike.
Visit any of the Welcome and Information Desk (WID) locations at the Main or Priory campus to complete the River Forest Bicycle License Registration form and receive a license sticker.
BIKE PARKING
Riders are highly encouraged to lock and secure their bicycles at all times. Designated bicycle racks are provided around campus including garage parking (1st Fl.)
Bikes should be secured within designated bike parking areas, and not secured to railings, stairwells, handicapped access ramps, posts, or benches, which impede accessibility and may pose a safety hazard. Please see the Retrieving bikes section below for additional information.
ABANDONED BIKES
To ensure that riders can safely store their bikes while on campus, please accommodate fellow cyclists by removing your bike from bike racks in a timely fashion. The bicycle racks on campus are intended for short-term bike parking. Bikes displaying signs of significant neglect, such as a rusted chain, bent or flat tires, or missing parts will be tagged with a yellow “Notice of Violation” and are subject to removal. If you feel your bike may have received this notice in error, please see the Retrieving bikes section below for additional information.
RETRIEVING BIKES
If your bike has been removed due to it being designated as either abandoned or illegally parked, please contact Campus Safety, (708) 524-5999 or safety@dom.edu to identify your bike and to schedule a pick-up.
- Bikes can be claimed at Campus Safety located in the Parking Garage (1st Fl.)
- Hours of operation are between 8:00AM – 4:30PM, Monday through Friday.
- In addition, to verify ownership, if the bike is not registered with the University or Village of River Forest, the bike lock key or combination must be presented.
- Bikes will be stored in the University storage area for a minimum of 30 days. After 30 days the bicycles are donated to a local charity.

Dominican University partners with a local non-profit to donate abandoned and unwanted bikes. Our partnership currently includes:
BIKE REPAIR
The Main campus has a Dero Fixit bike repair station located in the Parking Garage, 1st Fl., where you can pump up your tires, adjust your seat height, brake cables, or derailleurs and/or change out a tire.
BIKE SAFETY
Dominican University motorists and bicyclists alike are encouraged to complete the Gold level – Adult Quiz of the IL BikeSafetyQuiz (BSQ) sponsored by Ride Illinois – a remote learning resource that instructs motorists and bicyclists on how to properly and safely share the road.
All bikeDU participants MUST complete the Gold level of the IL BikeSafetyQuiz (BSQ) to maintain membership in the free campus bike share program. Completed Gold level certificates can be emailed to bikedu@dom.edu.
