Issue
Remote Zoom participants can hear the presenter or lectern microphone, but they cannot hear audience members asking questions or speaking from within the room.
Symptoms
- Presenter audio is heard clearly by Zoom attendees.
- Audience questions are not heard by remote participants.
- No microphone or hardware failures are observed.
- In-room audio system appears to function normally.
- Issue typically occurs during presentations, musical performances, panel discussions, or events with audience interaction
Cause
The Zoom meeting audio profile is configured with Noise Removal (default behavior), which uses noise suppression and echo cancellation to prioritize the primary speaker. This processing can suppress audience voices, room ambience, and sounds originating farther from the microphone.
For events that require capturing room audio, audience participation, or musical performances, Zoom recommends using Original Sound for Musicians, which reduces audio filtering and preserves a broader range of sounds captured by the microphone.
Resolution
Before the Meeting
- Open Zoom.
- Select Settings.
- Select Audio.
- Under Microphone Modes, choose:
- Original Sound for Musicians
- Verify the desired microphone source is selected.
- Save settings.
During the Meeting
- In the Zoom meeting toolbar, locate the Microphone icon.
- Click the up-arrow (^) next to the microphone.
- Under Microphone Modes, select:
- Original Sound for Musicians
- Confirm remote participants can hear audience members speaking in the room.
Validation
After changing the setting:
- Have a person speak from the audience seating area.
- Ask a remote participant to confirm audio can be heard.
- Verify both presenter audio and audience audio are transmitted successfully.
