Rosalyn.ai is an exam integrity platform integrated with Canvas to help instructors secure online assessments. Dominican University uses Rosalyn as its primary proctoring solution.
Modes of Operation
Rosalyn offers two modes of operation: browser lockdown and real-time proctoring.
Browser Lockdown Mode
Browser Lockdown Mode prevents students from:
- Opening additional browser tabs
- Launching other applications during the assessment
- Leaving the protected testing environment
This option is well suited for in-class computer-based exams and situations where students should focus exclusively on the assessment.
Real-Time Proctoring Mode
Real-Time Proctoring includes all browser lockdown features and additionally:
- Records the student's screen
- Records webcam video
- Records audio during the exam
- Uses AI-assisted monitoring
- Includes review by human proctors
Rosalyn uses a human-in-the-loop approach that combines automated monitoring with human review.
Technical Requirements
Canvas Requirements
Rosalyn works only with Canvas Classic Quizzes.
Rosalyn does not currently support:
- Canvas New Quizzes
- Other external assessment tools integrated with Canvas
Student Device Requirements
Students must have:
- A Windows or macOS computer
- A stable internet connection
- A supported web browser
Supported browsers include:
- Google Chrome
- Microsoft Edge
- Mozilla Firefox
Safari support is limited.
Unsupported Devices
Rosalyn does not support:
- Chromebooks
- Linux computers
- Smartphones
- Tablets
Internet Requirements
A stable internet connection is required. Rosalyn checks connectivity before launching an exam and may prevent students from starting if the connection quality is insufficient.
Limitations of Rosalyn
Before using Rosalyn, be aware of the following limitations:
- Supports Classic Quizzes only
- Does not support New Quizzes
- Requires Windows or macOS
- Does not support Chromebooks, tablets, smartphones, or Linux devices
- Requires a stable internet connection
- Browser Lockdown Mode does not allow instructors to selectively permit specific websites or applications during an exam
For assessments that require students to access external resources, those resources should generally be embedded within the quiz instructions or questions whenever possible.
Costs
Using Rosalyn incurs a cost on a per-exam-session basis. Because charges are incurred each time a student takes a protected assessment, instructors should use proctoring judiciously and reserve it for situations where exam security requirements justify the expense.

Cost Considerations
For small quizzes, practice tests, or low-stakes assessments, the cost of proctoring may outweigh the benefit. Browser Lockdown Mode is generally the more economical option when students are testing on campus or when full proctoring is not required. Real-Time Proctoring should typically be reserved for high-stakes examinations where additional monitoring is necessary.
Software Installation
Campus Computer Labs
Rosalyn is pre-installed on most Dominican University classroom and lab computers. Students testing on campus typically do not need to install the software themselves when using supported university computers.
Installation on Student Devices
Students using personal computers must install the Rosalyn application before taking a protected exam. The Rosalyn interface provides a download link for the required software.
Loaner Laptops
Students who do not have a compatible device may be able to obtain a loaner laptop through the Support Center.
Using Rosalyn
Enable Rosalyn in a Course
Before using Rosalyn, both the Rosalyn and Quizzes navigation items must be enabled in the Canvas course.
- Open the Canvas course.
- Select Settings.
- Select Navigation.
- Activate both Rosalyn and Quizzes in the course navigation menu.
- Arrange them in the desired location.
- Select Save.
Important: Both navigation items must be enabled for Rosalyn to function properly.
Enable Rosalyn for a Particular Quiz
- Open the Rosalyn course navigation link.
- Locate the Classic Quiz you wish to secure.
- Toggle the quiz On.
- Choose the desired proctoring mode:
- Real-Time Proctoring
- Lock-Down
- Select the desired exam options and choose Next.
- In Lock-Down mode, options are preset and cannot be modified.
- Review the configuration.
- Select Confirm & Enable.
Instruct students to use the Rosalyn menu to take the quiz
When Rosalyn is enabled for a quiz, instructors should clearly inform students that the assessment must be launched from the Rosalyn course navigation link and not from the Canvas Quizzes menu. We recommend adding quiz instructions that direct students to the Rosalyn menu to take the quiz. A sample notice might read:
This is a proctored quiz.
Use the Rosalyn link in the course navigation menu to access this quiz. The Rosalyn software is available for download through that link.

Student Access and Access Codes
After Rosalyn is enabled:
- Students should access the assessment through the Rosalyn menu.
- The quiz will still appear in the Canvas Quizzes area.
- Rosalyn automatically adds an access code (secret password) to the quiz.
Because students do not know the access code, they cannot launch the assessment directly through the Canvas Quizzes menu. This ensures that Rosalyn proctoring is used.
Do not share the access code with students. Anyone with the code can bypass Rosalyn by entering the quiz directly through Canvas.
