Multifactor Authentication (MFA) Registration for Microsoft Authenticator App
You have selected to use the Microsoft Authenticator app as an additional verification method for accessing DU services & resources. Please follow the directions below to ensure this method is configured correctly.
NOTE: If you previously had MFA set up, and received a new phone or deleted the app, then you will have to prompt your account for re-registration before following these steps. Please refer to this article.
Step 1. Download and install the Microsoft Authenticator app
From your smartphone or tablet, visit the Apple app store or Google play store on your device and install the Microsoft Authenticator app.
Note: Be sure that you are installing the correct free app, titled "Microsoft Authenticator"; there are several similar apps on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
Step 2. Set up MFA for your DU account
From a computer, visit https://aka.ms/mfasetup and login with your Dominican email address.
- From that webpage, choose the "Add sign-in method" option. For the method, choose "Authenticator app", and click Add.
Note: At this point, rather than logging in, you might encounter a "More information required" message when logging in at https://aka.ms/mfasetup. If this happens, click "Next" to proceed directly to the "Start by getting the app" section.
- You should have already downloaded the Authenticator app onto your smartphone or tablet. Click Next.
- When you see "Set up your account", click Next again.
- The webpage will now generate a unique QR Code. Keep this page open on your device and proceed to Step 3.

Note: the QR code will expire after a few minutes. If it does, refresh the page or start the process over to get a new one.
Step 3. Add your DU account to the Authenticator app
From your smartphone, open the Microsoft Authenticator app.
- If this if your first time using the Authenticator app, select Accept to accept Microsoft’s privacy statement when prompted. Then, select "Scan a QR Code".
- Or, if you already have the app, select "Add an Account" at the home screen. Then select "Work or school account", and "Scan QR code".
- With your smartphone or tablet (1), scan the QR Code (2) that was generated on your computer after completing Step 2 to enroll your device. Your DU account should now appear in the app.
- After clicking Next on the webpage, your smartphone will receive a verification request and a set of numbers will appear on the webpage. You will need to enter the numbers you see on the screen into the Authentication app. On your computer, you may now close the web page.
Congratulations! You are now set up with the Microsoft Authenticator app and can receive notifications for multifactor authentication verification.
From now on, you will only receive verification requests on your smartphone when attempting to access select Dominican University resources from off-campus.
If, after setting up MFA, you later decide to change your default notification method, please contact the support center.
