Body

BitLocker is a built-in drive encryption feature in Microsoft Windows that helps protect your data from unauthorized access. Whether its your personal device or DU Owned, understanding how BitLocker works and what to do when it's triggered is essential for maintaining access to your system and ensuring your data remains secure.

What Is BitLocker?

BitLocker encrypts the entire drive that Windows runs on, making the contents unreadable to anyone without proper authorization. It is most commonly used to protect data on lost or stolen devices or to meet organizational and compliance requirements for data security.

BitLocker often works in conjunction with a Trusted Platform Module (TPM)—a special chip on your computer that stores encryption keys securely. When the system starts, BitLocker checks for any unauthorized changes (e.g., new hardware, boot file modifications). If everything is normal, BitLocker unlocks automatically. If not, the system will ask for a BitLocker recovery key to access the drive.

Key Benefits of BitLocker:

  • Encrypts the entire disk to secure data

  • Protects against data theft from lost/stolen devices

  • Prevents tampering or unauthorized system changes

  • Helps organizations comply with data protection regulations

What Triggers BitLocker to Activate?

BitLocker may prompt for the recovery key under the following conditions:

  • A change in the computer's BIOS or UEFI firmware

  • Hardware changes (e.g., motherboard, hard drive)

  • Updates to the boot files

  • Moving the hard drive to another computer

  • Disabling or clearing the TPM

  • Sudden power loss or system crash during startup

What To Do When BitLocker Prompts for a Recovery Key

If BitLocker activates and asks for a recovery key, follow these steps:

  1. Do Not Attempt Random Entries – This will not bypass the lock and could cause further issues.

  2. Locate Your BitLocker Recovery Key – It might be stored in one of the following places:

    • For Personal Devices:

    • For DU Owned Devices:

      • Support Center: If this is a work or school device, contact the Support Center. We can provide the key.

      • NOTE: Although the University issued devices to students at the Chicago campus, these devices are classified as Personal Devices

  3. Enter the Key When Prompted – This will allow you to unlock the drive and access your system.

  4. Contact Support If Needed – If you can’t find the recovery key, reach out to the Support Center or device manufacturer for further guidance.
